Shared hosting vs VPS: convenience or control

Shared hosting is designed to make publishing easier. VPS hosting gives you more isolated resources and server control. The better fit depends on the application and your willingness to manage the environment.

Choose shared or managed hosting when

You want a provider managed environment for a conventional website, blog or store and do not need root access.

Choose VPS when

You need server level configuration, dedicated resource allocations, custom software or an application stack that does not fit standard managed hosting.

Do not upgrade by instinct

A VPS is not automatically better for every website. Extra control has operational cost. Upgrade when your workload or technical requirements justify it.
